Design inspired by traditional Indian motifs
In Sanskrit, the word 'Kantha' means 'cloth', referring to pieces of cloth hung in temples and on trees to symbolize prayers that ward off the evil eye. For the people of Bengal, it means “quilted and embroidered cloth” and is a real art of recycling, because originally kanthas were made from old second-hand materials, especially silk from saris. Instead of throwing away the worn fabric, the pieces were layered and joined together using stitching and embroidery, with all sorts of designs, from the simplest to the most elaborate. A real kantha is a unique work of art that tells a story, evoking the feelings and life of the artist. The designs frequently represent gods and goddesses, flowers, animals... The KANTHA scarf, which reproduces one of these pieces, required extraordinary engraving work to suggest quilting and embroidery work.
